Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS) Introduction

Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS) is one of the largest society in China, and is the first-order organization under the Chinese Association of Science and Technology. In Feb. 1947, four Scientists, Chen Zongqi, Gu Gongxu, Wang Zhizhuo and Weng Wembo proposed to launch the CGS. In August 1947, CGS was founded in Shanghai, Mr. Chen Zongqi was voted as the first president of council. Based on nine primary subjects, Geodesy, Seismology, Meteorology, Geomagnetism,     Geoelectricity, Volcanology, Hydrology, Tectonophysics and Applied geophysics, CGS originated Journal of the Chinese Geophysical Society and set up a committee for examining and approving the geophysical terms, and ascertained organizing academic exchange and publishing as the main actives of society.
CGS was migrated to the capital Beijing in 1954. Now it has total 15418 registered members including 56 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the members come from 1622 units such as institutes, universities, industrial companies and relevant government departments. The CGS has 17 special committees, 1 chapter, 6 commissions and 5 scientific journals.
The President of Council in CGS is Chen Yong, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and professor Guo Jian is the secretary-general. The past presidents of council in CGS were Chen Zongqi, Zhao Jiuzhang, Guo Gongxu, Weng Wenbo, Liu Guangding, Wang Shui and Chen Yong in turn, all of them are top scientists in the China.
Geophysics is a science to research the genesis, formation, evolution, structure, composition of the earth by means of physical methods, including the celestial geophysics, atmospheric geophysics, solid geophysics and marine geophysics. Geophysics plays a very important role in the construction and development of national economy and human survival and life, such as energy exploration, resource reconnaissance, minerals production, environmental detection and protection, disaster prevention and control, and engineering construction. Its can bring benefit to mankind through developing modern science basing on the learning properties and attributes of the earth and finding the inner profound through observing and investigating the relevant objects of the earth. After more than 60 year’s development, CGS plays an important role in national economic development, such as in energy exploration, resource reconnaissance, minerals production, environmental detection and protection, disaster prevention and control, and engineering construction.
CGS was the main reformative unit of Chinese Association of Science and Technology in 80s. Now CGS sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Ministry of Land and Resources China (MLRC), China Earthquake Administration (CEA), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC), China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China National Administration Coal Geology (CNACG).
